I understand your frustration, but you are letting it lose on the wrong recipient. It's technically impossible unless Apple changes it. And that file provider API cannot index files stored in the cloud. Apple is forcing every cloud storage provider to go through the new File Provider API - there is precisely and exactly zero option to circumvent that. They no longer have any control over this *whatsoever*.

What you fail to understand - no offense - is the fact that even if Google wanted to do it differently, they can't. The whole point of paying for a cloud service is that the files are in the cloud! If I had them on my computer, why would I be paying for it? We've been able search local files the entire time because they are local. Let us know in the comments which Google service you feel needs a marketing refresh in 2021.Pass that off as something Google did.

I hope to see more changes like this across its services. Google has made a large push this year toward simplifying their marketing and becoming more ‘user friendly’. You can still get Backup and Sync as an individual, but I highly recommend that you switch over to Drive File Stream (Now Google Drive for Desktop). The web for Google Drive for Desktop has also received a visual refresh, featuring some Googley graphics. Beginning in April of 2021, version 47.0 will receive Apple M1 support and additional bug fixes and performance improvements.On MacOS, the application name has been renamed to “Google Drive”.

The mount path remains the same, and your files are still accessible from the same location, but any shortcuts to the application existing on your machine have been renamed using the new nomenclature.
